What is Zakat?
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — a mandatory annual alms paid by eligible Muslims on wealth above a minimum threshold (nisab) held for a full lunar year (hawl). The rate is 2.5% of net zakatable wealth.
Zakat is distributed to eight eligible categories defined in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60): the poor, the needy, zakat collectors, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, slaves seeking freedom, debtors, in the way of Allah, and travelers.
Nisab threshold 2026
The nisab is the minimum wealth below which no zakat is due. Two standards:
Most scholars recommend using whichever nisab is lower (usually silver) for maximum charity. Many modern Muslims use gold nisab because silver's price has dropped relative to historical value.
What counts as zakatable wealth?
✓ Included (zakatable)
- Cash in hand, checking accounts, savings accounts
- Gold and silver jewelry (some scholars exclude jewelry in regular use)
- Gold/silver coins, bars, investments
- Stocks and shares (use current market value or 25–30% for long-term holdings)
- Mutual funds, ETFs, cryptocurrency
- Business inventory (at current market value)
- Receivables (money owed to you that you expect to receive)
- Investment property held for resale (not primary residence)
- Retirement savings like 401(k), EPF — scholars differ, some say zakat on accessible portion
✗ Not zakatable
- Primary residence (the home you live in)
- Personal vehicle (family car)
- Clothing, household items, furniture
- Tools of trade (if you're a tailor, your sewing machine isn't zakatable)
- Rental property (building itself) — but rental income received and held is
Debts — what to subtract
You may subtract short-term debts due within the current year from your zakatable wealth. This includes:
- Credit card balance
- Current rent or utility bills due
- Short-term personal loans
- Unpaid zakat from previous years
You do NOT subtract long-term debts like 20-year mortgages. Scholars differ on mid-length debts — most permit subtracting this year's portion.
Worked example
Suppose you have, at the end of your lunar year:
- Cash in bank: PKR 8,00,000
- Gold (tola/grams × current price): PKR 5,00,000
- Mutual fund investments: PKR 3,00,000
- Total: PKR 16,00,000
- Short-term debt (credit card): PKR 50,000
- Net zakatable: PKR 15,50,000
Since PKR 15,50,000 exceeds the PKR ~14,70,000 nisab, zakat is due. Zakat = 15,50,000 × 2.5% = PKR 38,750.
When to pay Zakat
Zakat is due when your wealth has exceeded nisab for one complete lunar year (hawl). Most Muslims choose a fixed date — often 1 Ramadan or 1 Muharram — to calculate and pay each year, for consistency. Paying during Ramadan is not required but is encouraged, as rewards are believed to be multiplied.
Zakat should be paid promptly after calculation. Delaying without valid reason is discouraged.
