What is Zakat and the nisab?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam: a 2.5% annual due on qualifying wealth held for a full lunar year (hawl), once your net wealth exceeds the nisab threshold. Nisab is the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver; most scholars suggest using the silver nisab so more of your wealth benefits those in need. The calculator uses live gold and silver prices to set the nisab in BDT automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is Zakat in Bangladesh?

Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth — cash, gold, silver, shares and business assets, minus immediate debts — once it exceeds the nisab and has been held for one lunar year.

What is the nisab in Taka?

Nisab equals the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver, which changes daily with metal prices. The calculator sets it in Taka from live gold/silver prices; the silver nisab is lower.

Is Zakat payable on savings certificates and shares?

Yes, on their current value as investments held for growth. Add cash, deposits, the value of shares/funds and gold together, then subtract immediate debts.

When is Zakat due?

After a full lunar year (hawl) on wealth above the nisab. Choosing a fixed annual date — often in Ramadan — makes it easy to track and pay consistently.

Gold nisab or silver nisab?

Both are valid. Many scholars favour the silver nisab because it is lower, so more people qualify and more wealth is given to those in need.
