What is Zakat and the nisab?

Zakat is a 2.5% annual due on qualifying wealth held for a full lunar year (hawl), once your net wealth exceeds the nisab — the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver. The calculator sets the nisab in KWD from live gold and silver prices; many scholars suggest the lower silver nisab so more wealth reaches those in need.
