UAE car loan basics
UAE auto financing is regulated by the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE). Because AED is pegged to USD, interest rates closely track the US Federal Reserve. The CBUAE raised its Base Rate to 3.90% on 16 September 2026, in lockstep with the Fed.
Car dealers and banks typically quote flat rates (simple interest on the full loan amount for the whole tenure), not reducing-balance rates. This makes the advertised number look much lower. The actual equivalent rate on a reducing-balance basis is roughly 1.8× to 2× the flat rate.
Conventional vs Islamic Ijarah
Conventional auto loan
The bank lends you money to buy the car. You pay it back with interest over the tenure. Straightforward — same as anywhere else in the world. Providers include Emirates NBD, First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB), Mashreq, HSBC, Citibank.
Islamic Ijarah (lease-to-own)
The bank buys the car and leases it to you. You pay monthly rent. At the end of the lease, ownership transfers to you (usually for a nominal AED 100 final payment or via a binding promise to sell). Providers: Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB), ADIB (Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank), Emirates Islamic, Sharjah Islamic Bank.
Economically, the monthly payment is similar to conventional. The Shariah structure avoids riba (interest) by recharacterizing the transaction as a lease rather than a loan.
Example: AED 150,000 new car
Take a new Toyota Camry priced at AED 150,000. You put 20% down (AED 30,000) and finance AED 120,000 over 5 years at 3.5% reducing-balance:
- Monthly installment: approximately AED 2,183
- Total interest paid: approximately AED 10,990
- Total cost of car: AED 160,990
For the same car with an Islamic Ijarah from Dubai Islamic Bank at 3.6% effective, monthly lease rent would be approximately AED 2,188 — nearly identical.
Requirements for UAE residents
To qualify for a car loan in UAE you typically need:
- Valid UAE residence visa with at least 6 months validity
- Minimum salary of AED 5,000–8,000 (varies by bank)
- Bank account with salary transfer for 3+ months
- Emirates ID and passport
- Salary certificate or bank statement
- Clean AECB (Al Etihad Credit Bureau) credit report
Non-residents (tourists, visitors) generally cannot finance a car in UAE. Some banks offer UAE national preferential rates — if you're an Emirati, expect rates 0.25–0.5% lower.
Choosing your tenure
UAE caps car loan tenure at 5 years. Shorter tenure = higher monthly payment but much lower total interest. For example, the same AED 120,000 loan:
- 5 years @ 3.5%: AED 2,183/mo, total interest AED 10,990
- 4 years @ 3.5%: AED 2,684/mo, total interest AED 8,820
- 3 years @ 3.5%: AED 3,518/mo, total interest AED 6,652
If you can afford the higher monthly payment, a 3-year loan saves you AED 4,338 in interest. Many UAE expats prefer 3 years for this reason — and to match typical employment contract durations.

UAE banks quote car loan pricing as a flat rate, not the reducing-balance (effective) rate this calculator uses internally. As of December 29, 2025, published reducing-balance ranges by lender included Emirates NBD at 4.10%-7.50%, First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) at 4.10%-6.51%, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) at 3.79%-7.00%, Dubai Islamic Bank at 4.72%-6.50%, and Emirates Islamic at 5.01%-6.50%. Separately, ADCB's own car loan page advertises a flat rate of 1.99% to 5% for its Excellency/Emirati Excellency customer segments, illustrating how much the flat number understates the true cost versus the reducing-balance figure a calculator like this one produces.
Because AED is pegged to the US dollar, UAE bank lending rates move with the US Federal Reserve's rate path via the CBUAE base rate, which was raised to 3.90% on 16 September 2026 — banks add a margin on top of that base when pricing car loans, which is why the reducing-balance ranges above run well above the base rate.
A more realistic example: on a AED 100,000 loan over 60 months, a lender advertising a 2.5% flat rate charges total flat interest of AED 12,500, for a flat-method monthly payment of AED 1,875. A 2.5% flat rate on a 5-year term is roughly equivalent to a 4.75% reducing (effective) rate — plugging that into M = P·r·(1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1) with r = 0.0475/12 and n = 60 gives M ≈ AED 1,875/month, confirming the equivalence. Plugging the 2.5% flat rate directly into the reducing-balance formula instead (as if it were already effective) produces only AED 1,775/month — about AED 6,000 understated over the life of the loan.
This flat-vs-effective gap isn't just marketing — it's specifically regulated. CBUAE Regulation No. 29/2011, Article 6, requires banks to calculate car-loan interest on a reducing-balance basis and states that any bank advertising a flat rate must disclose the equivalent effective rate side by side. The same regulation's Article 3 caps loan-to-value at 80% of the vehicle's value (a minimum 20% down payment) and limits the term to a maximum of 60 months — rules that apply uniformly regardless of nationality or residency status for car loans specifically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do UAE banks quote car loan interest as a flat rate or a reducing rate?
Most UAE banks, including Emirates NBD, ADCB, FAB, Dubai Islamic Bank and Emirates Islamic, advertise car loans using a flat interest rate on their rate cards, while the true cost to the borrower is better represented by the reducing-balance (effective) rate. As of December 2025, published reducing-balance ranges spanned roughly 3.79% to 7.50% depending on the lender and customer profile, even though flat rates advertised (e.g. ADCB's 1.99%-5% flat) look much lower.
Why does a UAE bank's flat car loan rate look so much lower than the effective rate?
A flat rate is calculated on the full original loan amount for the entire term, ignoring the fact that the balance shrinks every month as you repay it. A reducing-balance rate charges interest only on the outstanding balance each month. As a rule of thumb, a flat rate is roughly half to two-thirds of its reducing-rate equivalent over a typical 5-year term.
