What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — a mandatory annual alms paid by eligible Muslims on wealth above a minimum threshold (nisab) held for a full lunar year (hawl). The rate is 2.5% of net zakatable wealth.

Zakat is distributed to eight eligible categories defined in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60): the poor, the needy, zakat collectors, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, slaves seeking freedom, debtors, in the way of Allah, and travelers.

Nisab threshold 2026

The nisab is the minimum wealth below which no zakat is due. Two standards:

Gold nisab (87.48g × ~USD 60/g)≈ USD 5,250
Silver nisab (612.36g × ~USD 0.90/g)≈ USD 550
Approx. in PKR (gold)≈ PKR 1,470,000
Approx. in INR (gold)≈ INR 4,38,000
Approx. in AED (gold)≈ AED 19,300
Approx. in SAR (gold)≈ SAR 19,700

Most scholars recommend using whichever nisab is lower (usually silver) for maximum charity. Many modern Muslims use gold nisab because silver's price has dropped relative to historical value.

What counts as zakatable wealth?

✓ Included (zakatable)

✗ Not zakatable

Debts — what to subtract

You may subtract short-term debts due within the current year from your zakatable wealth. This includes:

You do NOT subtract long-term debts like 20-year mortgages. Scholars differ on mid-length debts — most permit subtracting this year's portion.

Worked example

Suppose you have, at the end of your lunar year:

Since PKR 15,50,000 exceeds the PKR ~14,70,000 nisab, zakat is due. Zakat = 15,50,000 × 2.5% = PKR 38,750.

When to pay Zakat

Zakat is due when your wealth has exceeded nisab for one complete lunar year (hawl). Most Muslims choose a fixed date — often 1 Ramadan or 1 Muharram — to calculate and pay each year, for consistency. Paying during Ramadan is not required but is encouraged, as rewards are believed to be multiplied.

Zakat should be paid promptly after calculation. Delaying without valid reason is discouraged.

Frequently asked questions

Is zakat 2.5% of yearly income or total wealth?
Total wealth held for one lunar year, not income. A one-time bonus doesn't trigger zakat until it's been in your possession for a full year and brings your wealth above nisab.
Do I pay zakat on money I owe to others?
No — you subtract debts you owe (short-term) from your zakatable wealth. You don't pay zakat on borrowed money or loan principal.
Can I pay zakat monthly instead of once a year?
Yes, you can pay in installments (split the annual amount across 12 months). Some scholars prefer annual lump sum for clarity; both are acceptable.
Does this calculator handle silver nisab?
The default uses gold nisab (most common modern practice). To use silver nisab, note your net wealth manually — if it exceeds the silver threshold (~USD 550), calculate 2.5% regardless of what the calculator says.
Is zakat deductible from my taxes?
Depends on country. Pakistan: zakat deducted from bank accounts during Ramadan is tax-credit-eligible. Malaysia: zakat is tax-creditable. UK/US/EU: depends on whether payment is to a registered charity. Consult a local tax advisor.

Where to pay Zakat

Trusted organizations that collect and distribute Zakat globally:

In Pakistan, government zakat is deducted automatically from savings accounts on 1 Ramadan. You can file a declaration (CZ-50 form) to opt out of government zakat if you prefer paying privately.
