Fixed deposit rates in Mexico (2026)

Pagaré rates ≈ 8–10% p.a. for 1-yr tenures. CETES via Cetesdirecto: 364-day 7.11% at the 13 October 2026 auction (Banxico). Top bank rates at Banco Azteca, Banco del Bajío.

At around 8%, the fixed-deposit rate in Mexico is relatively high in nominal terms.

Reference figures, ~2026. FD interest is often taxable and rates vary by bank and tenure - verify the current rate before depositing.

Scale to your deposit amount. Longer tenures and higher rates grow the maturity value; compare banks before locking in.

How to get the best fixed-deposit return in Mexico

A real-data rate check: fixed-term deposits (pagarés) in Mexico (2026)

Many generic fixed-deposit calculators default to rates copied from U.S. or European tables (2-4%), which badly understates what a peso-denominated (MXN) 12-month time deposit actually pays. Mexico has run a much higher policy rate than developed markets to fight inflation: Banco de México (Banxico) held its overnight target rate at 6.50% after its September 24, 2026 decision, and the government's own 364-day CETES benchmark bond yielded 7.11% at the October 13, 2026 primary auction (28-day CETES: 6.25%; 91-day: 6.55%; 182-day: 6.79%). Because bank pagarés are priced off this same curve, their 12-month MXN rates sit close to or above the CETES yield, not near zero.

Traditional retail banks' 12-month pagaré rates vary (check on each bank's own site) depending on the institution, deposit size and term, with digital-first banks such as Hey Banco advertising up to 7.50% on a 28-day term for Hey Pro clients — compared with the legacy branch-network banks (BBVA México, Banorte, Santander México, Citibanamex, HSBC México), whose current pagaré rates vary with balance and promotional tiers and should be checked on each bank's own site. This spread mirrors Banxico's own gradual easing cycle from an 11.25% high in 2023-2024 down to 6.50% by August 2026, which has been pulling nominal deposit rates down each quarter even as they remain well above what savers see in the US or Europe.

A more realistic example: using an 8.0% annual rate — a little above the 364-day CETES yield (7.11% at the October 13, 2026 auction); check your bank's own pagaré rate — depositing $100,000 MXN with monthly compounding (A = P(1+r/n)^(nt), n=12) grows to $108,299.95 after 1 year and $127,023.71 after 3 years, versus roughly $102,000-$104,000 that a calculator defaulting to a 2-4% "developed-market" rate would wrongly show.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is FD maturity calculated in Mexico?

Maturity = P × (1 + r/4)^(4n) for quarterly compounding, where P is the deposit, r the annual rate and n the years. fin·calc uses this standard method.

What is the current FD rate in Mexico?

As a 2026 reference, fixed-deposit rates are around 8% per year, varying by bank and tenure. Pagaré rates ≈ 8–10% p.a. for 1-yr tenures. CETES via Cetesdirecto: 364-day 7.11% at the 13 October 2026 auction (Banxico). Top bank rates at Banco Azteca, Banco del Bajío.

Is FD interest taxable in Mexico?

In most countries FD interest is taxable as income; some offer tax-advantaged or senior-citizen options. Check your local rules - the calculator shows the pre-tax maturity value.

Is a fixed deposit safe in Mexico?

Fixed deposits carry no market risk. In Mexico, bank deposits are typically protected by a national deposit-insurance scheme up to a set per-depositor limit. Confirm the current cap and which banks qualify before you deposit. They trade higher safety for lower long-term returns than equities.

Should I choose a fixed deposit or invest instead in Mexico?

A fixed deposit gives a guaranteed return and suits money you cannot afford to risk. Investing targets higher long-term growth but can fall in value. Many people keep an FD for safety and invest separately for growth.

Why is Mexico's default fixed-deposit rate so much higher than in the US or Europe?

Because Banco de México has kept its policy rate elevated to control inflation. After its September 24, 2026 decision, Banxico's overnight target rate stood at 6.50%, and the 364-day CETES government bond yielded 7.11% at the October 13, 2026 auction — both far above US or Eurozone benchmark rates, which pushes MXN bank pagaré rates up correspondingly.

What annual rate do Mexican banks actually pay on a 12-month pagaré?

There is no single official figure: check the 12-month pagaré rate on each bank's own site, including traditional banks such as BBVA México, Banorte, Santander México, Citibanamex and HSBC México, and digital banks like Hey Banco (which advertised up to 7.50% on a 28-day term for Hey Pro clients).

How much would $100,000 MXN grow in a 12-month pagaré at 8% annual interest?

Using A = P(1+r/n)^(nt) with monthly compounding (n=12), $100,000 MXN at 8% annual interest grows to $108,299.95 after 1 year and $127,023.71 after 3 years — noticeably more than the ~$102,000-$104,000 a calculator using a generic 2-4% developed-market default would show.
