HBL CarLoan — what the product actually covers today
HBL's own CarLoan page still headlines "up to 85% financing" and "new, used, local or imported car," language that dates back to its 2017 Key Fact Sheet. Those figures are no longer how the loan works: since the State Bank of Pakistan's Prudential Regulations for Consumer Financing were tightened, every bank's auto financing — HBL included — is capped at 70% of the vehicle's value, so the real minimum down payment is 30%, and imported vehicles (new or used) are no longer eligible at any bank. Only locally assembled or manufactured cars qualify. HBL's eligibility page does confirm current age and income floors: salaried applicants must be 22–60 years old with a minimum gross monthly income of PKR 20,000, while self-employed applicants must be 22–70 with a minimum of PKR 25,000 a month, plus a valid CNIC and a clean credit history.
| Term | HBL CarLoan (current rules) |
|---|---|
| Minimum down payment | 30% of vehicle value |
| Max tenure | 5 yrs (≤1000cc) / 3 yrs (>1000cc), per SBP rules |
| Min. income | PKR 20,000/mo salaried · PKR 25,000/mo self-employed |
| Processing fee | PKR 6,000 or 1.40% of loan amount, whichever is higher |
Eligibility and fee figures per HBL's own CarLoan page and Schedule of Bank Charges for January–June 2026 — tenure and down payment follow the SBP-wide caps explained below, which override HBL's older marketing figures. Always confirm the live offer with the bank.
Pricing, insurance and the SBP rules behind the caps
HBL prices CarLoan on a floating basis tied to the prevailing KIBOR plus a bank spread disclosed in the loan's Key Fact Statement at the time you apply — HBL does not publish a fixed public spread the way a printed rate card would, so the effective rate you're quoted depends on your tenure, vehicle and relationship with the bank. Comprehensive insurance is mandatory throughout the loan, through an HBL-approved insurer (its Key Fact Sheet lists Adamjee, JGI, EFU and TPL), and HBL offers the policy with or without a vehicle tracker. Beyond the processing fee, HBL's Schedule of Bank Charges lists a late-payment charge of PKR 1,500 per missed installment, an early-settlement charge of 10% of the outstanding amount if you cancel before vehicle delivery or 5% after delivery, and a repossession charge capped at PKR 100,000 or actual cost, whichever is lower.
The 30% down payment and shorter tenure aren't HBL-specific — they come from the State Bank of Pakistan's Prudential Regulations for Consumer Financing. BPRD Circular Letter No. 29 of 2021 raised the minimum auto-finance down payment from 15% to 30%, cut the maximum tenure from 7 to 5 years, capped a single borrower's combined auto-finance exposure across all banks and DFIs at PKR 3,000,000, and stopped banks financing imported vehicles. BPRD Circular Letter No. 19 of 2022 then split the tenure cap by engine size: up to 5 years for 1000cc-and-under cars, and up to 3 years above 1000cc. See our Bank Alfalah Car Finance page for the full detail on these SBP rules, since they apply to HBL's CarLoan the same way.
Worked example
For example: a PKR 3,000,000 locally assembled car, financed with the SBP-mandated 30% minimum down payment (PKR 900,000), leaves PKR 2,100,000 to finance. Using the calculator's own illustrative reference rate of 17.5% p.a. over a 5-year tenure (available if the car is 1000cc or below):
- Monthly installment: ≈ PKR 52,757
- Total markup over 5 years: ≈ PKR 1,065,399
- Total payable: ≈ PKR 3,165,399
This example uses an illustrative rate to show the mechanics — HBL does not publish a single fixed rate, so enter your own car price, down payment, quoted rate and tenure in the calculator above for a figure based on your actual offer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What down payment does HBL CarLoan require?
HBL's own CarLoan page still advertises financing up to 85% of the car's price, but that figure predates the State Bank of Pakistan's 2021 rule change. Since BPRD Circular Letter No. 29 of 2021, every bank's auto financing, HBL included, is capped at 70% of the vehicle's value, so the minimum down payment is 30%.
Can HBL CarLoan finance an imported car?
No. HBL's marketing page still lists "new, used, local or imported car" as eligible, but current SBP prudential rules bar every bank from financing new or used imported vehicles. Only locally assembled or manufactured cars qualify today.
What income do I need for HBL CarLoan?
HBL's published eligibility is a minimum gross monthly income of PKR 20,000 for salaried applicants (age 22–60) and PKR 25,000 for self-employed applicants (age 22–70), alongside a valid CNIC and satisfactory credit history.
What does HBL charge to process a CarLoan?
HBL's Schedule of Bank Charges for January–June 2026 lists an application processing fee of PKR 6,000 or 1.40% of the loan amount, whichever is higher, charged upfront, plus a late-payment charge of PKR 1,500 per missed installment.
Is HBL CarLoan Shariah-compliant?
No, the standard HBL CarLoan is conventional, interest-based financing (HBL also sells a separate Islamic CarFinance product under HBL Islamic). For an Islamic alternative from another bank, compare Meezan Bank's Car Ijarah, a lease-based structure with no interest.
