Where to invest & expected returns
Bangladesh has no market-wide "SIP" category, but a few named, BSEC-regulated asset managers offer one: IDLC Asset Management's SIP takes BDT 5,000/month into one of four named funds, and ICB Asset Management's SIP starts from just BDT 1,000/month (minimum 2-year commitment). The recurring-investment product most Bangladeshis actually use, though, is the bank-run Deposit Pension Scheme (DPS) — a fixed or near-fixed monthly savings product. BRAC Bank's own published DPS rate table (effective January 2, 2026) pays 8.50% in year one, rising to 9.00%–9.25% for the 3-to-10-year tier, with a BDT 500/month minimum. Bangladesh Bank cut its policy rate to 9.50% in late July 2026 (its first cut in roughly two years), while inflation eased to 8.32% in July 2026 per the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.
Returns are long-term historical averages or published bank rates, not guarantees — markets fall as well as rise, and bank rates change. Invest for the long term and diversify.
The power of compounding
Investing ৳10,000 per month for 15 years at 11% p.a.:
- Future value: ৳4,588,576
- Total invested: ৳1,800,000
- Estimated gains: ৳2,788,576
That's roughly 2.5× your money — most of it from compounding. Scale the ৳10,000 to your own monthly amount. Starting earlier matters more than investing more.
A real-data rate check: long-term investment returns in Bangladesh (2026)
Before you pick a default return assumption for a monthly investment plan, it helps to look at what Bangladeshi markets and funds have actually delivered. The DSEX (Dhaka Stock Exchange Broad Index) has traded well below its October 2021 all-time high since then (check the current level on the Dhaka Stock Exchange's own site). Measured from that October 2021 peak to September 2026, the DSEX has actually posted a negative annualized return. This shows that assuming aggressive double-digit equity index growth every year for Bangladesh is not realistic.
Individual mutual funds have fared better than the broad index over their full NAV history, but with wide dispersion. Data tracked by ReturnKoto (as of 15 September 2026) across 35 open-end Bangladeshi mutual funds shows annualized total returns (dividends reinvested) of roughly 2.1% to 13.5%/year for growth funds, 2.1% to 12.2%/year for balanced funds, and 7.4% to 19.8%/year for income funds such as the VIPB Fixed Income Fund (+19.78%/yr) and UCB Income Plus Fund (+13.47%/yr), while a top growth performer like the CWT Emerging Bangladesh First Growth Fund returned about +13.52%/yr.
A more realistic example: investing BDT 5,000 every month for 15 years (180 months) at a moderate assumed rate of 10% per year, using FV = P × [((1+r)^n - 1)/r] × (1+r): FV ≈ BDT 20,90,000 (about 20.9 lakh) against total contributions of BDT 9,00,000 — a gain of roughly BDT 11,90,000. This is far more grounded than assuming 15-18% annual returns, which the DSEX's own recent history does not support for a diversified, moderate-risk plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a sip work in Bangladesh?
You invest a fixed amount each month into funds or an index. You buy more units when prices are low and fewer when high (cost averaging), and returns compound over time.
What return can I expect in Bangladesh?
Long-term historical equity returns are around 11% per year here, though any single year can be sharply up or down. DPS schemes ≈ 9–11% p.a. DSE30 equity long-term ≈ 11%. Providers: IDLC, LankaBangla.
What is the minimum to start?
Most platforms let you start small and increase later. Setting up an automatic monthly investment builds discipline and smooths out market timing.
Is investing better than a fixed deposit?
Investing targets higher long-term growth but carries market risk; fixed deposits are safer but usually return less. Many people hold both, matched to their time horizon.
What annual return should I assume for a Bangladesh SIP calculator?
Based on Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSEX) index history and Bangladeshi mutual fund NAV data through September 2026, a moderate 8-10% annual return is more realistic than assuming 15%+ growth every year. The DSEX itself has been negative over the last five years, while diversified income and balanced funds have historically returned roughly 7-13% per year.
Has the Dhaka Stock Exchange actually grown over the long term?
Not consistently. The DSEX hit its all-time high in October 2021 and has traded well below that level since (check the current DSEX on the DSE's own site), implying a negative annualized return over that stretch. This volatility is why a recurring monthly investment (SIP) plan should use a conservative, not optimistic, default rate.
