Zakat in Malaysia: state-collected, not federal

In Malaysia, zakat is not collected by a single national body — it is administered separately by each state's Islamic religious authority, since religious affairs fall under state jurisdiction. Muslims in the Federal Territories (Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Putrajaya) pay through Pusat Pungutan Zakat (PPZ-MAIWP), while those in Selangor pay through Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS); every other state has its own equivalent body (for example Zakat Pulau Pinang or Majlis Agama Islam Johor). This calculator uses the universal 2.5% rate on net wealth held for one lunar year (hawl) once it exceeds the nisab — the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver — but you should still pay through your own state's zakat body, since it decides where the money is disbursed locally and issues your official zakat receipt. What wealth is zakatable?

Worked example

If your net zakatable wealth (above nisab, held one lunar year) is RM1,000,000:

Scale to your own wealth — zakat is simply 2.5% of the net total above nisab.

Zakat pendapatan and the LHDN income tax rebate

Malaysian employees and self-employed Muslims commonly pay zakat pendapatan (income zakat) — 2.5% of employment or business income once it reaches the nisab. State zakat bodies such as PPZ-MAIWP and Lembaga Zakat Selangor set the nisab from the value of 85 grams of gold, so the exact ringgit figure moves with the gold price and is published separately by each state; there is no single fixed national number. Two calculation methods are used: the gross method (2.5% of total annual income) and the net method (2.5% of income left after deducting had al-kifayah, basic living costs for yourself and your dependants, at rates set by your state body).

Zakat paid this way is not a tax deduction — it is a tax rebate, and the distinction matters a lot. Under Section 6A(3) of the Income Tax Act 1967, every ringgit of zakat paid by a Muslim individual is credited directly against the tax you owe LHDN, ringgit-for-ringgit. A relief (like most other tax reliefs) only lowers your chargeable income, so it saves you tax at your marginal rate; a rebate wipes the amount straight off your final tax bill. The rebate is capped at your total tax payable for the year — if your zakat exceeds your tax bill, the excess is not refunded or carried forward, though the zakat itself has still been paid in full. If your employer deducts zakat monthly and remits it to your state body, it still qualifies for the rebate when you file.

Zakat on EPF/KWSP savings

Because EPF (Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja, KWSP) is a compulsory retirement scheme, its treatment under zakat is a specific ruling rather than a general rule. Lembaga Zakat Selangor's fatwa distinguishes two situations: withdrawals made before age 55 (the age at which KWSP members may make a full withdrawal from their savings) are zakatable at 2.5% of the amount withdrawn once it reaches the nisab; from age 55 onward, the entire KWSP balance becomes zakatable annually under the ordinary savings method, and contributors no longer need to zakat that money again separately through income zakat while still working. Non-Shariah-compliant investment returns credited to an EPF account do not need to be separately purified, since contributions are mandated by law rather than by individual investment choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is Zakat in Malaysia?

Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth — cash, gold, silver, shares and business assets, minus immediate debts — once it exceeds the nisab and has been held for one lunar year.

What is the nisab in MYR?

Nisab equals the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver, which changes daily with metal prices. The calculator sets it in MYR from live prices; the silver nisab is lower.

Is Zakat due on shares and investments?

Yes — the current market value of shares and funds held as investments is included. Add them to your cash and gold, then subtract immediate debts.

When should I pay Zakat?

After a full lunar year passes on wealth above the nisab. Many people pick a fixed annual date, often in Ramadan, and pay every year on that date.

Is zakat a tax deduction or a tax rebate in Malaysia?

It is a rebate, not a deduction. Under Section 6A(3) of the Income Tax Act 1967, every ringgit of zakat paid by a Muslim individual is credited straight against tax payable, not merely against chargeable income. The rebate is capped at your total tax payable for the year; any excess is not refunded or carried forward.

Which body do I pay zakat pendapatan to in Malaysia?

Zakat is collected by state religious authorities, not a federal body — for example Pusat Pungutan Zakat (PPZ-MAIWP) for the Federal Territories or Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) for Selangor. Rates, the nisab figure and deductible living-cost allowances can differ slightly by state.

Do I have to pay zakat on my EPF/KWSP savings?

Lembaga Zakat Selangor's ruling treats KWSP withdrawals made before age 55 as 2.5% zakatable on the withdrawn amount once it reaches nisab. From age 55, the full KWSP balance becomes zakatable annually under the savings method, and contributors no longer need to zakat the same money again through income zakat.

Can I get the zakat rebate if my employer deducts zakat from my salary?

Yes. Many employers deduct zakat pendapatan monthly and remit it to the state zakat body on the employee's behalf; the amount still counts as zakat paid for that year and can be claimed as a rebate under Section 6A(3) when filing with LHDN.
