Zakat in Türkiye: no state collection, but official guidance exists
Türkiye has no state zakat authority — unlike the compulsory zakat systems some Muslim-majority countries run, Turkish citizens calculate and pay zakat themselves, to whichever eligible recipients or charities they choose. What Türkiye does have is religious guidance from the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı), whose fatwa board (Din İşleri Yüksek Kurulu) publishes the definition, nisab and conditions of zakat on its own site. Diyanet's fatwa page explains that nisab is reached at roughly 80.18 grams of gold (traditionally stated as "20 miskal"), or the livestock equivalents (5 camels, 30 cattle, 40 sheep/goats), and that the wealth must be held for a full lunar year and exceed the owner's debts and essential needs before zakat becomes due (Diyanet Din İşleri Yüksek Kurulu, accessed 24 September 2026). This calculator instead uses the more commonly cited gold-nisab figure of 87.48g, which many other national zakat bodies (and this site's other country pages) apply; if you follow Diyanet's 80.18g figure exactly, your own threshold will be slightly lower.
Fitre, Ramadan and Türkiye Diyanet Vakfı as a payment channel
Every year, shortly before Ramadan, Diyanet's Din İşleri Yüksek Kurulu also announces the year's fitre (fitrah / Zakat al-Fitr) amount — a separate, smaller obligation from wealth-based zakat, owed per person before Eid prayers. For the period from the start of Ramadan 2026 to the start of Ramadan 2027, the Kurul set fitre at ₺240 per person, announced 13 January 2026, while noting people may give more based on their own food costs and may pay in cash or in kind (Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı, 13 January 2026, accessed 24 September 2026). Diyanet itself does not collect money; the most common formal channel Turks use to pay both fitre and zakat is Türkiye Diyanet Vakfı (TDV), the Foundation affiliated with Diyanet. TDV accepts zakat via its partner bank branches, online/mobile banking (donors simply tell the bank they are giving "Diyanet Vakfı'na zekât"), direct TL/EUR/USD IBAN transfers to its Ziraat Bankası accounts, its bagis.tdv.org donation portal, and SMS, and states no fee is deducted from bank-channel donations (Türkiye Diyanet Vakfı, accessed 24 September 2026). Local provincial mufti offices (müftülük) and other registered Turkish charities also accept zakat directly.
Valuing savings in TRY during high inflation and FX/gold accounts
Türkiye's annual consumer inflation was 31.51% in August 2026 according to TÜİK (Turkish Statistical Institute), only slightly down from July's 31.75% (Euronews, citing TÜİK, 3 September 2026, accessed 24 September 2026). That level of TRY volatility raises a practical zakat question that flat-currency countries don't face as sharply: which value do you use for savings you held throughout the lunar year — the TRY balance on your zakat due-date, or something adjusted for how much purchasing power it lost? The standard fiqh answer used by scholars, including Diyanet's own fatwa guidance, is to value all cash, bank balances and FX holdings at their current market value on your zakat anniversary date, not at some earlier or inflation-adjusted figure — zakat is assessed on wealth you actually hold today, converted to TRY (or your calculation currency) at today's rate.
Many Turks manage TRY volatility by holding part of their savings in a bank altın hesabı (gold account) — a demand or fixed-term account denominated in grams of gold rather than TRY, marketed by banks such as İş Bankası, Kuveyt Türk and Akbank specifically as a way to protect savings as "the TL equivalent of gold holdings rises with the gold price" (İş Bankası, accessed 24 September 2026). For zakat purposes, gold-account balances are treated the same as physical gold: add the gram value at the current gold price. The same applies to gold kept "under the pillow" (at home, in a safe, or as jewellery held as savings rather than for personal adornment) — its full current market value counts toward your zakatable wealth exactly like a gold account or bank deposit, whether or not a bank or the state ever records it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Turkish state collect zakat?
No. Türkiye has no state zakat authority or compulsory collection. Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı publishes religious guidance (nisab, conditions, and the annual fitre amount) but individuals calculate and pay their own zakat to eligible recipients or a charity of their choice, such as Türkiye Diyanet Vakfı.
What nisab figure does Diyanet use?
Diyanet's fatwa board states nisab as roughly 80.18 grams of gold (traditionally "20 miskal"), reached once wealth is held a full lunar year above debts and essential needs. This calculator uses the more widely cited 87.48g figure common across other zakat bodies; check Diyanet's page directly if you want to follow its exact 80.18g threshold.
How do I value savings when the lira is falling?
Use the current TRY market value of your cash, bank balances, FX and gold-account holdings on the date your zakat year is due — not a value from earlier in the year. Inflation and exchange-rate moves during the year don't change the rule: what matters is what your wealth is worth today.
Does gold kept at home count toward zakat?
Yes. Gold "under the pillow," in a home safe, or held as savings jewellery is valued at its current market price and added to your zakatable wealth exactly like a bank altın hesabı or gold ETF — there's no exemption for gold simply because it isn't in a financial account.
