How Kenya's exchange rate and diaspora remittances work

The Central Bank of Kenya runs a floating, market-determined exchange rate for the shilling: "the Central Bank does not set the exchange rate; it is market determined based on supply and demand of foreign exchange," and CBK publishes daily indicative KES rates calculated as the weighted average of spot trades reported by banks in the interbank market (CBK, "Forex"). CBK's own exchange-rate policy note explains that it intervenes only to manage its own reserves and official transactions, or to smooth excessive short-term volatility — it does not try to defend a particular shilling level, since "supporting a specific level or direction of movement of the exchange rate in a liberalised foreign exchange market... is neither sensible nor achievable" (CBK, "The CBK Exchange Rate Policy"). In practice this means the USD/KES rate you see quoted moves with genuine market supply and demand rather than a fixed peg, and individual banks and forex bureaus then set their own retail margins on top of it.

Remittances from the diaspora are one of Kenya's largest sources of hard-currency inflows, and CBK tracks them closely: it runs a monthly survey of remittance inflows through commercial banks and other authorised money-remittance providers, broken down by source region (North America, Europe and the rest of the world). The most recently published figure at the time of writing is USD 451.8 million for August 2026 (CBK, "Diaspora Remittances"). North America — chiefly the United States — has consistently been the largest single source region in CBK's published breakdown, which is part of why USD-denominated transfers make up such a large share of inbound remittance volume.

Always compare the total received in KES, not the headline fee — a "zero fee" transfer can hide a poor exchange rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the live USD to KES rate today?

Rates change constantly — use the converter above for the current mid-market USD/KES rate. The amount received depends on the provider's margin and fee on top of that rate.

What is the cheapest way to send USD to Kenya?

Get quotes from two or three providers and compare the total KES received for your exact amount, since providers price differently by amount.

Why is my rate worse than Google's?

Google shows the mid-market rate. Providers add a margin and sometimes a fee, so your effective rate is slightly lower. Compare the final amount across two or three options.

How do I get the best USD–KES rate?

Compare total received across a few providers, use first-transfer promos, focus on the margin not just the fee, and send larger amounts less often to dilute fixed costs.

Can money sent from the US go straight into my recipient's M-Pesa account?

Yes. M-PESA Global lets a registered M-Pesa customer receive funds sent from abroad directly onto their M-Pesa account, including through partner networks like Western Union and TerraPay, and Safaricom states that only customers with an existing, registered M-Pesa account can receive funds this way.

Is there a limit on how much can land in an M-Pesa account from a US transfer?

Safaricom's own published M-PESA Global limits cap a transaction at KES 150,000, with a KES 101 minimum. A provider sending a larger amount than that may split it into multiple payouts or route it to a bank account instead — check with your provider before sending a large sum.

How big are diaspora remittances to Kenya, and does Kenya track them officially?

Yes — the Central Bank of Kenya runs a monthly diaspora remittance survey covering banks and licensed remittance providers. The latest published figure is USD 451.8 million for August 2026, and North America has typically been the largest single source region.
